Within the hypnotherapy industry, there is currently no one overall accrediting or governing body although there are moves afoot to try and consolidate this. The ICH always ensures that it is aware of changes to the structure of the industry and to accrediting bodies. We hope that the uncertainty that this situation currently creates is resolved as soon as possible and we shall endeavour to hasten the process.
There are currently two groups in discussion regarding the national regulation of hypnotherapy.
These are the UK Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisations (www.ukcho.co.uk) and the Working Group for Hypnotherapy Regulation (www.hypnotherapyregulation.co.uk) which includes the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) and the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR).
The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health www.fih.org.uk is encouraging these discussions.
The ICH is a member of the UKCHO and participates in their discussions about the curriculum for the profession. In order to be a member we have to comply with the National Occupational Standards (NOS).
ICH students usually join the GHR which accepts their qualifications as being appropriate for being in public practice.
The ICH is in favour of there being a single regulatory body for the profession. The ICH’s view regarding accreditation is that there should be one externally recognised national examination. This would cut out much argument about courses and training and would ensure that high standards were met throughout the UK.
Any further queries regarding regulation please contact our office by email or telephone.
